SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION REGARDING ENDANGERED SPECIES AND CRITICAL HABITATS FOR THE RANCHO SECO NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA

Dear Dr. Haas:

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) has submitted a license amendment to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to decontaminate and decommission the Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station (Rancho Seco). The NRC is reviewing the environmental report submitted by SMUD and preparing an Environmental Assessment (EA) for the facility located near in the southeast part of Sacramento County, California. The facility was the site of a 913-MWe pressurized-water reactor (PWR). SMUD shut down the facility permanently on June 7, 1989.

We are requesting a list of threatened or endangered species or critical habitats within the action area. The action area is defined as the Rancho Seco site which is located either wholly or partly within Sections 27, 28, 29, 32, 33 and 34 of Township 6 North, Range 8E. The action area is approximately 26 miles North-Northeast of Stockton, CA and 25 miles Southeast of Sacramento, CA.

After assessing the information provided by you, the NRC will determine what additional actions are necessary to comply with Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act. If you have any questions or comments, or need any additional information, please contact Gregory Suber of my staff at 301-415-1124.

Sincerely,

/BJDavis for RA/
