Dear Mr. Keenan:
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has received your application dated July 21, 2006, requesting NRC authorization, pursuant to Title 10 Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR), Sections 20.1703 and 20.1705, to use French-designed respiratory protection equipment that has not been tested and certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and to take credit for an assigned protection factor of 2000 for this equipment. You also requested an exemption from 10 CFR 20.1703(f) to not provide standby rescue persons whenever this equipment is used.
We have completed the initial processing, which is an administrative review, and have accepted your application for a more detailed technical review. The more detailed technical review may identify omissions in the submitted information or technical issues that require a request for additional information (RAI). These will be forwarded to you under separate cover in the future.
The staff expects to complete its review by November 21, 2006, if no RAI is required.
