SUBJECT:

WASHINGTON STATE UNIVERSITY NUCLEAR RADIATION CENTER NOTIFICATION OF OVERFLOW OF LIQUID WASTE SYSTEM This letter is intended notify the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission of an event at the Washington State University Nuclear Radiation Center. This letter is for informational purposes only and not a required notification.

Attached is a report that details the events of the July 8-9, 2006 in which a stuck float valve on the buildings boiler systems settlement tank caused an inadvertent overfilling of the lower waste tank of the liquid waste system. The area of the overflow was cordoned off by Campus Police and protected from public access by constant monitoring by various members of the reactor staff until results of water samples could be accurately assessed. After the samples had been analyzed and assessed to contain no radioactive material in excess of background the area was released for normal use.

After event analysis has resulted in several proposed changes to the liquid waste system and building drainage lines. Prevention activities are ongoing.
