OFFICE OF SECRETARY RULEMAKINGS AND ADJUDICATIONS STAFF Action Required:

Recommendation:

Sirs, I am a maintenance worker at Byron Nuclear Generating Station and am concerned about the "one day off every seven days during a refuel outage" rule.

When you are a Back-Shift worker (midnight shift) during refuel outages, taking a day off in the middle of an outage does nothing but disrupt the workers sleep pattern. When you are a night shift worker, it takes a few days to get your body adjusted to the "sleep during the day and be up all night" routine. Being forced to take a day off in the middle of an outage does no good for the worker because you have to go through the adjustment period all over again and you are not as alert and performance errors could occur.

Some may not have a problem with constantly changing their sleep habits, but as for myself and many others, it is very difficult.
