Subject:

Dresden tritium bullet Dresden station personnel identified increased tritium levels in the groundwater at the station. Elevated tritium levels are an historical issue at the site; the licensee had previously established a series of wells and instituted routine sampling to track the problem.

Licensee sampling has identified increased levels of tritium at several areas within the protected area.

The levels in an area near the Unit 2/3 condensate storage tanks (CSTs) are approximately three to six million picocuries per liter (pciI). Levels in this area have varied historically but have typically been less than 20,000 pci/I. Levels of approximately 50,000 pci/ have been identified in an area near the Unit 1 sphere. Licensee Technical Specifications limit the average annual concentration of tritium released at the site unrestricted area boundary to ten million pci/A. No tritium has been detected at any samplina stations outside the owner controlled area. The station believes that the source of the elevated tritium levels is from a leak in the underground lines that pull a suction from the CSTs. Regional personnel are closely monitoring licensee efforts to identify and secure the source of the leakage.
