z-Enterg Indian Point Energy Center Status Report March 16, 2006 Operational Status Indian Point Unit 2 is operating at 100% and has been on line 14 days. Indian Point Unit 3 is operating at 100% reactor power and has been on-line for 162 days.
Entergy Briefs Local Officials Ground Water investigation and sirens on the agenda Indian Point hosted a briefing for local public officials today at the site. Don Mayer, Director Special Projects, outlined the progress on the ground water investigation at Indian Point. Mayer told the group of about 35 attendees that the Phase 1 well construction is complete and all wells have been analyzed for radioactivity. All but five of the fourteen wells in Phase 2 have been drilled. Some of these wells have been developed and sampled also.
A thorough briefing was provided by Entergy and Entergy's consulting hydrologist that covered investigation status including the current conceptual hydrology model for the Indian Point site. Site Vice President Fred Dacimo restated his commitment to continue to thoroughly pursue the ground water investigation and openly report all findings to our stakeholders.
Don Mayer discussed sample results obtained today from two wells in the Unit 2 transformer yard area that have been analyzed for Strontium-90. Strontium 90 is a by-product of the fission process and can also be found at trace levels in the environment. Sr-90 was not detected in any of the other wells in the same general area. These levels are extremely low and are very near environmental background levels. We will further analyze these results as part of the ongoing ground water investigation.
The sample results were well below the EPA drinking water standard and do not pose a safety or health risk to workers or the public. All off-site locations, as previously published, were negative for radioactivity including near by surface water supplies such as the Croton Reservoir and the Camp Field Reservoir.
Representatives of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and New York State Health Department and Department of Environmental Conservation also attended the meeting. They described their role in providing oversight to the ground water investigation.
Mike Slobodein, director of emergency programs for Entergy, provided an update on

()()d z'Entery the siren project. All the sirens in the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone will be replaced with new sirens that incorporate a backup power supply. The new system will have multiple communications systems for improve reliability and will allow sounding from each of the four counties in the EPZ.
The new siren system will be installed in parallel with the existing system and installation will be complete and tested before the new system is operational.
Slobodien also discussed a companion project, called Common Alerting Protocol, which will complement the siren system. A CAP is a way to have pre programmed or ad hoc messages broadcast on a large number of devices such as cell phones (text messages), PDAs, E-mail, highway signs, internet Above is a pitu of the new web sites and outbound telephone dialing systems (often siren horns. Unlike the current referred to as "reverse 911").
siren, this model is omni-directional and does not have to be rotated when sounded.
Slobodien indicated that he expected to have the siren system operational by January 2007. The CAP is being deployed independently of the sirens.
NRC to Hold Public Meetings on Indian Point The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold two public meetings on March 28 in Peekskill, N.Y. The first meeting, which begins at 2:30 p.m., will be the annual end of cycle meeting that reviews the plants' performance over the past year. Later that evening, the NRC will hold a public meeting regarding their special inspection of Entergy's investigation regarding the spent fuel pool leaking and groundwater monitoring. The evening meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Representatives from the NRC, Entergy and New York State Agencies will discuss the current status of the investigation and the current assessment of radiological impacts. A question and answer period will follow the presentations.
Both meetings will be held at Crystal Bay in Peekskill, N.Y.
NRC meeting notice Status Report Available on JIC Website The Indian Point status report is now available on the new Joint Information Center web site. The web site is part of the virtual news room concept that is being developed for public emergency information. The web site will also include the latest radiological release information for Indian Point.
