Nuclear Fuel Article on ANL Hot Cell Carl, There is a small error in the article that does not affect the main message, but could be confusing to some. Here is some clarification.

We do a lot of tests on defueled cladding and a few tests on cladding with fuel inside. The LOCA tests with fuel inside have all been done for the BWR Limerick fuel. Many, but not all, of the tests on defueled cladding from the Robinson PWR have been completed, but none of the tests with fuel inside have been done for the Robinson fuel.

The article gives the impression that all of the testing is on defueled cladding.

In fact, it is the small number of tests with fuel inside that are our biggest problem (this applies to LOCA and spent fuel). These tests must be done in a heavy-duty hot cell like AGHCF, and there is no ready alternative. We can probably get enough defueled cladding (Zircaloy, M5, and ZIRLO) to finish most of the cladding-only tests in IML.
