oh White - RE: IPEC status report for December 19 GusJPage 21 December 19, 2005 Operational Status Indian Point Unit 2 is operating at 100% and has been online 380 days.
Indian Point Unit 3 is operating at 100% reactor power and has been on-line for 76 days.
Indian Point Unit 2 Fuel Pool Investigation Status Please Note: There will be a tentative stakeholder call, the last one until after the New Year, at 3:30 p.m.,
this Wednesday.
Indian F'oint continues its investigation into apparent leakage from the Unit 2 spent-fuel pool. Entergy has obtained samples from existing and newly installed monitoring wells and storm drains located at various locations on site. Only tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, has been seen in sampling done outside the fuel storage building. Most of the wells showed very low amounts or no tritium. As previously reported, two wells showed elevated levels. One well is located in the fuel storage building and the other in the Unit 2 transfbrmer yard. No other radioactive isotopes that are in spent-fuel pool water were identified in the well or storm-drain samples.
Additior al monitoring wells have been drilled in the transformer yard to develop a more comprehensive picture of underground water movement and help identify the source of the tritium. Results from these three wells showed elevated levels of tritium, as anticipated. The tritium levels are about one-half to one-sixth the amount in samples taken from the nearby monitoring well (MW-1il1) in the transformer yard that were reported last month, but are above the EPA drinking water standard.
A storm drain also located in the transformer yard, in vicinity of monitoring well MW-1i1, has had sample results with elevated tritium, which we expect results from interaction with the same groundwater as the monitoring well.
Indian Point technicians today report test results of samples taken on Dec. 16 from nine storm drains, including those in the transformer yard. Tritium was seen in all the manholes, but in small amounts and all were less than (within) the EPA drinking water standard.
The storm drains remove surface water on the site to the plant's discharge canal and then to the river, which is a monitored release path. The amount of tritium released through the storm drains is extremely small (.004%) compared to amounts released routinely, and well within federal safety limits.
