Newfane, VT 05345 March 16, 2006 Director 7 L kf US Nuclear Regulatory Commission S/ ./ L Washington, DC 20277

Dear Director:

I attended a Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station Public Information Session in Brattleboro, VT on March 1, 2006.

Mr. Johnny Eads led the meeting and circulated a form for feedback. I've sent this to him, but I need to address you because information is in good shape. What's not in good shape is any seeming awareness of what we expect from an agency calling itself "regulatory."

As I said in the form, Mr. Eads did a great job of explain- l ing the fact that the NRC has no role in oversight of the pres-ent upgrade, evacuation plans, or storage of highly radioactive waste. We didn't ask about plans about that, because immediate concerns were uppermost. We wanted to know who was in charge of the safety of the plant, and present and future safety of the West River valley, Connecticut river watershed, children in school and how the uprate and/or a future relicensing would be monitored.

The answer to questions about safety was FEMA. The house came down. When I went into the meeting, I was worried. When ).

I came out I realized we're on our own, and it's scary. /

When a federal agency. refuses to get involved in regulating nuclear power plants, except to agree to everything the owners want and to oppose efforts to increase public protection, we're all in serious trouble.

Sincerely, Ida R. Chamberlin P.S. I didn't sign Mr. Eads' form because I feared being part:

of a positive statistic. It isn't more information we need. It's regulation of the nuclear industry.
