NRC RESPONSE: Question on Ramapo Fault during public meeting on March 28, 2006
Dear Supervisor Puglisi,
During the NRC public meeting on March 28, 2006, you asked a question regarding the Ramapo Fault and Indian Point. Questions regarding the Ramapo Fault were raised at a 2004 public meeting by Dr. Lynn Sykes of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Subsequent to the 2004 meeting, Riverkeeper provided a copy of Dr. Sykes' information and requested NRC evaluate the issue. As I stated during the public meeting on March 28, 2006, the NRC evaluated this issue and provided a written response.
In summary the NRC response states "...the NRC staff conducted a systematic review of the latest seismic studies relevant to Indian Point. Based on its review, the NRC staff concludes that the seismic conditions at the Indian Point site have undergone thorough geologic and seismic investigations. The NRC staff also concluded that the seismic design provides sufficient safety margin to potential damaging earthquakes."
