Concerns meeting....
- Kim, I commend you on your attempt at improving the safe and continued operation of the Station. I understand that it was due to the Operations Department weekly meeting that "you" deemed it necessary as Harry's ear to look further into the situation. After our meeting tonight I hope you have a better flavor as to our concerns. We did not have the intent of causing any of our immediate supervisors to feel the grief you described. In the meeting a lot of concerns were aired, some were focused on more than others, but all were valid. Unfortunately as usual, even to myself, it sounded like a lot of "NEO" whining. Keep in mind that this meeting was not planned or offered with any time to prepare. Also keep in mind that even though you heard a lot of valuable information, information that you said was good, you only have had a small sample of the information availaole. There are a lot of good people working here that were not available to attend, but also have issues that need to be addressed. Your intent to get a fIdium together to address these issues with Harry, or his designee, is a direction I feel is needed. I have been involved with many such activities, and per your request, would agree to take part in this one, if I see it as a possible path to better operations here.
Like I have said I would take part in any actions that are in the best interest of the Station, including being involved with this course of action. Before this meeting takes place I feel you should at least poll the remaining individuals in the department for their concerns. As we are a department that has many issues, too many that can be addressed in one meeting, be careful in your polling. The information asked for should be of: Actions that we, "the Operations Department" have taken that in their opinion is adverse to the safe operation of a Nuclear Generating Station, Actions that have-not been in their opinion taken with the needed level of conservatism needed for this type of industry, Actions that have had detrimental effects on the safe being of those that work here and/or the equipment needed for safe operation, Actions that anyone feels might have a negative impact on the Station should any outside influence get word of it. After all, we should all be here for the long run, and any issues that meet the above criteria would most certainly lead to the early shut down of our livelihood. When polled the individuals should be asked to not immediately deluge you with lesser concerns that could mask those that need to addressed first. If this does indeed develop into a ongoing activity to improve operations, all concerns will eventually be heard. It is those greater concerns, and upper managements actions to those concerns, that will determine the success or failure of these activities and my involvement. These activities and any information gathered should be put out to all associated personnel. It should also be clearly communicated BEFORE any meeting so that all attending the meeting are as informed as the next guy on the content of the meeting. No one likes being blind sided, and it is also very disconcerting to hear "I was not aware of....... "from those that we trust to be running the station.
- Thanks, ALPO.....
