Call from SalemIHC alleger (RI..2003-A-01 10)
SENSITIVE ALLEGATION INFORMATION - TREAT SENSITIVELY - DO NOT FORWARD OR DISCLOSE The alleger called again this afternoon. She asked for status. I told her that, as she was aware, we had started interviews regarding the SCWE issue, I reiterated to her that we were just beginning the review and that it could take a period of time to get a comprehensive read. She acknowledged, but I'm pretty sure she will continue to call fairly frequently.
We discussed her request (from an e-mail she sent to me and Eileen over the weekend) to review her transcribed interview (from 9/9/03). I indicated to her that I had verified that a previous e-mail response I provided to her on that question was correct, i.e., that the NRC would not provide her with a copy of the transcript at this time, but that she could read the transcript in Ol's presence. I reminded her that she could FOIA the transcript after our file is closed. I told her that she would need to contact Eileen about when and where she could review the transcript, but reminded her that Eileen was very busy with the SCWE review at the moment. The alleger acknowledged Eileen's workload on this matter, praised her efforts, and indicated that she had no problem if it took a while before Eileen could set aside a day to sit with her while she read the transcript. She agreed that she and Eileen could arrange a date for this activity in the future.
She indicated to me that, as yet, she has not been contacted by the media about this matter, but she suspects that as the case moves forward, this will be come a significant local and possibly a national issue. She wanted me to know that, even though she has close contacts with some significant media outlets (e.g., New York Times, Washington Post) she has kept her promise not to bring her issues directly to Ihe media, beacuse she realizes that this would definitely change the picture, and possibly hinder our review effort. I thanked her and acknowledged that media involvement does alter the landscape. She indicated that she is still very appreciative of our efforts, noting that her experience has been nothing like what she has read about in the newspapers and Time Magazine. I thanked her again, and told her that since we can't control what Is stated in the media, all we can do is understand our job (which is to field safety concerns and assess them to determine if they are true, and whether NRC action is necessary), and do it.
