- SENSITIVE ALLEGATION INFORMATION -
- PROTECT ACCORDINGLY -
Alleger called me a few minutes ago. She told me that she had received a call from one of her contacts at the site who told her that the main thrust of the letter is being attributed to her. I told her that I could not control what site personnel may think about the background for the letter, but that we had made every effort to indicate that it was for multiple reasons and also not to fingerprint her. She agreed and acknowledged..... just thought it was something we should know.
She also asked if I had seen any information from media outlets about the letter. I informed her that I had not as yet. She indicated that it was possible tlWat we may see something in the New York Times either tomorrow or Sunday. She immediately followed that statement by telling me that she still did not feel she has "gone public" on this issue. I'm not sure how one statement follows the other. I can only assume that she contacted the New York Times, but asked them not to use her name. Or she asked someone else to provide information to the New York Times.

Re: Phone call from RI-2003-A-01 10 Salem/HC alleger I've received a call from the New York Times.... have to get back to him. I did speak to a reporter at the Camden Courier Post. He indicated he'd heard this could be attributed to one particular whistleblower... I did not confirm that.

-111; CLOSE THE SALEM NUKES NOW The UNPLUG SALEM Campaign 321 Barr Ave., Linwood NJ 08221 609-601-8583/601 -8537; ncohenl2@comcast.net http:llwww.unplugsalem.orgl For Immediate Release:
01129104 WATCHDOG GROUP DEMANDS NRC CLOSE SALEM NUKES UNTIL SAFETY CULTURE PROBLEMS ARE FIXED The UNPLUG Salem Campaign, in response to a letter from Hub Miller, Regional Administrator for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to E.J. Ferland, the Chief Executive Officer of PSEG, owners of the three nuclear plants at Artificial Island, is urging the NRC to immediately close Salem Units One and Two, and Hope Creek, until a full investigation of the safety culture problems at PSEG can be investigated and fixed.
Miller's letter confirms that the NRC has been investigating safety allegations at Salem/Hope Creek for a number of months, and that these allegations are serious, because the NRC took the step of writing directly to the CEO of PSEG. The letter requires PSEG conduct Its own internal investigation and report to the NRC in 30 days.
The UNPLUG Salem Campaign is disappointed that the letter did not go further, and immediately shut all three nukes pending a complete investigation. "Allowing PSEG to conduct another in-house investigation, " said Norm Cohen, Coordinator of the UNPLUG Salem Campaign, "is yet another example of letting the fox guard the henhouse." " Miller's letter admits that PSEG has already conducted numerous in-house investigations, and safety culture problems have only worsened, not gotten better", Cohen continued.

Pacje1 The UNPLUG Campaign also disagrees with Miller's statement that NRC have not found 'serious safety violations'. The tritium leak itself was a serious violation.
Cohen continued, "Safety culture at PSEG is poor. We've been saying that for months now. Informants within PSEG have told us this, but have asked that their confidentiality not be compromised. We thus urge the NRC to do the right thing this time, and not allow Salem and Hope Creek to be the 'Davis-Besse on the Delaware"'.
The Campaign also urges Governor McGreevy and the NJ Department of Environmental Protection to support UNPLUG's demand that the plants be shut down now.
The UNPLUG Salem Campaign asks anyone that has additional information about the safety culture at SalemlHope Creek, to contact them at 609-601-8583. All information will remain confidential.
