02/20/04 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AND COMMUNITY CALENDARS UNPLUG SALEM CAMPAIGN TO UPDATE RESIDENTS ON PSEG NUKE SAFETY PROBLEMS The Close the Salem Nukes Now - UNPLUG Salem Campaign will update South Jersey and Delaware residents on the continuing safety problems at all three of PSEG's nuclear plants at a public meeting to be held Sunday, March 7TH, at 12:30 PIM, at the Salem Quaker Meetinghouse's rear annex, on East Broadway &

David Vito - [Know Nukesl-W:3/7 Salem meeting Dress release

__Page2a We will be planning for our 3/28 Protest at the Salem Nukes, featuring a PSEG Nuclear Whistleblower, and many great speakers.

This meeting and the 3/28 protest are important because recent NRC investigations continue to confirm that PSEG's safety culture is deficient. An NRC Inspection Report of PSEG's Hope Creek Nuclear Plant, dated January 26th, 2004, stated that: "The team's findings supported the conclusion in the Annual Assessment Letter (NRC Inspection Report 50-354/2003-01) of the existence of a substantive cross cutting issue in the problem identification and resolution area. There were three Green findings identified during this inspection associated with failure to implement adequate corrective actions. The findings involved poor prioritization and evaluation of an electro-hydraulic control oil leak, untimely resolution of residual heat removal minimum flow valve issues, and inadequate corrective actions for a control room chiller deficiency. Two of the findings were determined to be violations of NRC requirements."

As a warning of what could happen to Salem County if PSEG's safety problems are not fixed, the UNPLUG Salem Campaign will also show the video THREE MILE ISLAND REVISITED at this meeting. The half-hour video directly challenges the claim of the nuclear industry and government that "no one died" from the! core meltdown of the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in 1979, America's worst nuclear disaster. Through the testimony of area residents and scientific experts, the documentary presents compelling evidence that cancer deaths and birth defects increased in the area surrounding the Pennsylvania plant. The video reveals that the utility which owns the nuclear plant has been quietly awarding damages to hundreds of local residents who have brought suits, despite its insistence that no one was harmed.

We also are looking for more Salem County folks to take bigger roles in the UNPLUG Campaign. Please help us make Salem County safer.

Light refreshments will be served. Please join us on 3/7.
