SUBJECT:
CALVERT CLIFFS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT, UNIT NO. 2 - PRELIMINARY ACCIDENT SEQUENCE PRECURSOR ANALYSIS OF JANUARY 2004 OPERATIONAL EVENT
Dear Mr. Spina:
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has prepared the enclosed preliminary accident sequence precursor (ASP) analysis of an operational event that occurred at Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, Unit No. 2 in January 2004. On January 23, 2004, the unit experienced excessive steam demand following a reactor trip due to low steam generator water level after a feedwater pump trip. This event was documented by Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, Inc.
(the licensee) in licensee event report (LER) 318/04-001-00, dated January 23, 2004, and in NRC Special Inspection Report No. 50-318/2004-008, dated July 29, 2004, and Supplemental Inspection Report No. 50-318/2005-006, dated February 11, 2005. Since the ASP analysis is preliminary, it is not available to the public.
The NRC staff requests that the licensee perform a peer review of the preliminary ASP analysis and provide any comments that it may have by March 31, 2006. Any comments from the review will be factored into the final ASP analysis, which will be publicly available.
If you have any questions regarding this matter, please call me at 301-415-1457.
Sincerely,
/RA/
