Nuclear Regulatory Commission 7 /2 20 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 Re: Federal Register notice p. 1774, Vol. 71, No. 7, Wednesday, January 11, 2006 Whereas the NRC's draft Safety Evaluation of the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant assumes margins of safety that are appropriate for new reactors, not old ones, it is only common sense to call for a detailed independent safety assessment before any decisions are made about an uprate. More research leads to more informed decisions; scientists and non-scientists can agree on that. I call on you to respond to the legitimate concerns of citizens and workers in southern Vermont by ordering an independent safety assessment.

Sincerely, Jeanne M. Walsh
