The NRC decision that a power uprate by Entergy Nuclear Vermont Yankee "would not involve a significant reduction in a margin of safety" is flawed and cannot be supported using objective standards. This proposal has caused grave concern to many observers who are experienced in the field of nuclear power.

Entergy Nuclear plans to calculate stress on Vermont Yankee's cracked steam dryer on an experimental basis, as effects of power increases in a 35 year old plant, that has experienced repeated accidents and failures and structural damage, are impossible to predict. A decision to allow the proposed uprate, without an independent-safety assessment, is extremely irresponsible.
