NPF-7 PRESSURIZER PENETRATIONS AND STEAM SPACE PIPING CONNEl PERFORMED FOR NRC BULLETIN 2004-01 In a letter dated May 28, 2004, the NRC issued NRC Bulletin 2004-01, "Inspection of Alloy 82/182/600 Materials Used in the Fabrication of Pressurizer Penetrations and Steam Space Piping Connections at Pressurized-Water Reactors (PW Rs)." The bulletin requested inspection of the Alloy 82/182/600 materials used in the pressurizer penetrations and steam space piping connections. It also requested a 60-day report regarding the inspections performed, including the as-found condition of the pressurizer shell and associated penetrations.
During the fall 2005 refueling outage for North Anna Unit 2, Dominion performed 100%
bare metal visual examination of the welds connecting the pressurizer spray, three safety valves, and the power-operated relief valve nozzles to the associated downstream piping. No indications of leakage or cracking were found. In addition, best effort ultrasonic examinations were performed to the greatest extent possible given certain geometric limitations, resulting in an aggregate coverage of about 60%.
No reportable axial or circumferential flaws were found. Because the coverage was limited, no credit is taken towards fulfilling MRP-139 requirements. The ability to perform examinations that comply with Code and MRP-139 coverage and frequency requirements, and the alternatives relative to applying some form of mitigation to these welds are currently being analyzed.
Should you have any questions regarding Dominion's response to the bulletin, please contact Mr. Thomas Shaub at (804) 273-2763.
Very truly yours, Leslie N. Hartz L/
