Morning Report Date: DEC 13, 2005 PRIORITY ATTENTION REQUIRED MORNING REPORT - REGION III Licensee/Facility:
Notification:
3-2005-0023 12/13/2005 MR Number:
NUCLEAR MANAGEMENT CO., LLC
[1] W-2-LP Date:
Point Beach Call from Licensee Two Rivers, Wisconsin 050-00266 Dockets:
Manual Trip of Reactor
Subject:
At 3:39 a.m., control room operators manually tripped Unit 1 when main condenser vacuum began to decrease rapidly.
Loss of vacuum would have resulted in an automatic reactor trip had the operators not manually tripped the reactor.
The decrease in vacuum was caused by the failure of a running circulating water pump. The initial evaluation indicated a failure of the coupling between the pump and motor. The licensee is developing plans to evaluate the cause of the failure and repair the coupling. Plant equipment responded as designed to the trip.
Regional Action: The resident inspectors are following the licensee's evaluation of the cause of the coupling failure.
