Dear Sirs,
I am a maintenance worker at a nuclear generation plant and would like to comment on the proposed work hour restrictions. When a backshift worker such as myself has to take time off in the middle of a refuel outage, it honestly takes two days to get back into the swing of the midnight shift because of a disturbance of our normal sleep habits.
When you work an outage straight through from the beginning of the outage to the end you feel more alert each night than if you were to take a day or two off in the middle of the outage. By keeping the same work and sleep habits reduces the amount of mistakes that occur on the back shifts.
Also, the fewer turnovers that occur also reduces the amount of mistakes that occur. By only having two shifts, you are eliminating two turnovers daily that would occur on a large mod that often take place during refuel outages.
It is the opinion of the maintenance workers at the facility that I work that the work hours should remain the same as currently in place.
