VY End-of-outage news release FYI:
We are distributing the following news release this afternoon:
Entergy Vermont Yankee Completes Safe, Successful Refueling Outage BRATTLEBORO, VT -- Vermont Yankee control room operators reconnected the plant generator to the New England electrical grid Tuesday at 1:31 p.m., which marked the completion of the plant's 24th refueling and maintenance outage. The 30-day outage, which began on April 3, Involved the refueling of the reactor and installation of new equipment to support a proposed 20-percent increase in plant power output. The outage work related to the proposed power increase included the replacement of four feedwater heaters and replacement of the high pressure steam turbine as well as a complete disassembly and overhaul of the electrical generator.
Entergy Nuclear Site Vice President Jay Thayer said, "We have proven again with this very complex outage that Entergy Vermont Yankee and its contractors are an effective and focused team.
The outage work was well planned and performed with high quality workmanship and excellent nuclear and industrial safety performance."
Entergy Vermont Yankee's 500-member staff was supplemented by more than 1,000 other workers including Entergy employees from other nuclear plants and a wide range of temporary contractors including radiation protection technicians, engineers, inspectors, millwrights, electricians, pipefitters, boilermakers, welders, painters, equipment operators, insulators, carpenters and laborers.
The influx of maintenance workers on the plant's 18-month operating cycle and their associated taxes paid and local spending provides a major economic boost to the Vernon and Brattleboro area. The local economic benefit was further improved because the electrical generator rotor portion of the work was done by a General Electric 70-member crew at a local Brattleboro facility rather than an upstate New York alternative location.
Entergy Vermont Yankee provides reliable baseload power around the clock to New England utilities. The next scheduled refueling outage is scheduled at the Vernon plant in the fall of 2005.
