Neil, With respect to 2nd question, my understanding based on our 8/12 conference call with Entergy was that ENVY personnel (Entergy employees at Vermont Yankee) would replace the IBEW workers without reliance on Entergy fleet personnel (i.e., from other sites) for the first few weeks. In the event of a prolonged strike, they mayneed to call in Entergy fleet personnel. Cliff - please confirm this is correct.
Thanks, Rick

Rick/Cliff, Isn't the answer to the first set of questions is that VY has filed the report? Is there anything more we're doing on our end?

As for the second topic, isn't the correct answer that plant managers would man the reactor operator positions in the event of a strike, while Entergy may use workers from other plants to fill other roles?

Re: one more question

Carolyn, The current 40-year operating license for Vermont Yankee expires on March 21, 2012. There is no requirement as to when a nuclear power plant owner needs to apply for license extension, with a footnote:

If an owner applies at least five years before the license runs out, and the NRC has not completed its review at the time the license expires, the agency will allow a plant to continue operating until a decision is rendered. However, if an owner applies with less than five years remaining on its license, and the review is still going on when the license runs out, the NRC will offer no assurances that a plant will be able to continue operations in the face of an expired license.

Entergy has not stated when, or if, it will apply for license renewal for Vermont Yankee. However, you can see on the list of future applications that Entergy has reserved several spots for its plants without naming them: http://www.nrc.-ov/reactorsloDeratinallicensinq/renewal/applications.html We do not know at this point if VY would be one of those plants.

Typically, our review takes of a license renewal application takes about 2 years if there is no hearing and about 30 months if there is a hearing. By the way, a plant can seek a license extension of up to 20 years.

To date, every owner applying for renewal has gone for the full 20 years, which isn't surprising considering the amount of time and money involved in seeking an extension.

Neil, When would VY have to begin the application process for License extension? How long does it take the NRC to review?
Thanks, Carolyn Lorie
