REQUEST FOR INFORMATION ON CANCER INCIDENCE WITHIN THE AREA UNDER EVALUATION FOR THE PALISADES NUCLEAR PLANT LICENSE RENEWAL
Dear Dr. Wade:
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is reviewing an application submitted by Nuclear Management Company, LLC (NMC) for the renewal of the operating license for Palisades Nuclear Plant (Palisades). Palisades is located in Covert Township on the western side of Van Buren County, Michigan, and approximately 50 miles west of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
As part of its review of the license renewal application, the NRC is preparing a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) under the provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, as amended.
Two public scoping meetings were held in South Haven, Michigan, on July 28, 2005, as part of the NRCs environmental review process. During the meetings, several members of the public made statements asserting that there is a greater than average cancer incidence in the vicinity of Palisades. To support the NRC in its evaluation of these public statements, the NRC requests any information the Michigan Department of Community Health has regarding cancer incidence in the vicinity of the Palisades site.
