V ulRdUdt Ar2)wdPa Vermont Yankee (Enteray) Investigation into Two Missing Spent Fuel Rod Segments Update on April 29, 2004 -To date, Entergy personnel at Vermont Yankee have assembled an investigation team, established a charter, and have begun detailed reviews of special material inventory/accountability records. The Entergy team has also obtained a specialty robotic crawler" with an attached camera. Using the robotic crawler, the team has begun performing inspections beneath fuel storage racks in the spent fuel pool. Entergy's plan for in-pool inspections will begin with a search below fuel racks adjacent to the south wall of the spent fuel pool. It is along this wall that the spent fuel rod segment container has resided since 1980.
From this location in the spent fuel pool, Entergy hopes to be able to inspect the under-rack area below approximately 1/3 all fuel racks in the pool. Entergy personnel believe that this effort will be completed by Monday, May 3, 2004. The Entergy team will then assess how and when to proceed with under-rack inspections of the remainder of the pool. The NRC has begun a special inspection of this issue. The NRC and the State of Vermont are actively following Entergy's investigation efforts.
