Dear Chairman Diaz:
As we work to fully support rescue and recovery efforts in the Gulf Coast in the afltr Hurric-ae K~ina, I Write to notify you of my serious concerns with emergency preparedness in New York, and specifically with regard to the Indian Point nuclear power plants in my district.
As you are aware, the response to Hurricane Katrina has spurred serious debate over the federal government's ability to work with state and local governments to quickly and effectively respond to a serious disaster event. While there clearly remains much to be learned about the response to Hurricane Katrina, the information available thus far has generated concern about emergency preparedness in my district which, in addition to its proximity to New York City, is home to the Indian Point nuclear power plants.
You will likely recall that the viability of the emergency preparedness plans for Indian Point have been called into question, particularly after the release in 2003 of an independent review conducted at the request of Governor Pataki which identified significant problems with emergency preparedness around Indian Point.
I understand there are important priorities now with regard to Hurricane Katrina that must be urgently addressed. I fully support these efforts. However, I must request at this time that officials from your agency meet with state and local officials in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange and Dutchess counties at the earliest possible time to discuss emergency preparedness issues in the Hudson-Valley. An identical request has been sent to the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Officials should be prepared to discuss new concerns that have arisen in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
c-n Your attention and prompt response to this request is appreciated.
C Sincerely o
Sue W. Kelly Member of Congress PRINTED ON RECYCLED PAPER
