REPORT FROM THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON REACTOR SAFEGUARDS REGARDING THE LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION FOR ARKANSAS NUCLEAR ONE, UNIT 2
Dear Dr. Wallis:
In your letter to Chairman Diaz dated May 13, 2005, you summarized the results of the review by the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) on the Entergy Operations, Inc.,
license renewal application (LRA) for the Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 2 (ANO-2) and the associated Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staffs final safety evaluation report. On the basis of its review, the ACRS concluded that the programs established and committed to by the applicant provide reasonable assurance that ANO-2 can be operated without undue risk to the health and safety of the public if ANO-2 is allowed to extend its period of operation. In addition, the ACRS recommended approval for the renewal of the operating license for ANO-2.
Thank you for accommodating the schedule change and performing a timely review of the license renewal application submitted by Entergy Operations, Inc., for ANO-2, and the associated safety evaluation report prepared by NRC staff. Because of your expedited review of the LRA, the renewed license for ANO-2 was issued 1.5 months ahead of schedule. Your responsiveness to the NRC staffs request added greatly to the efficiency of the license renewal process of ANO-2.
I recognize the commitment of ACRS to safety and appreciate your efforts in support of the license renewal process.
