Dresden Unit 3 Steam Dryer Inspection Results - NRC Questions NRC staff review of the ongoing dryer inspection results has generated the following request for information.
- 1. What is the cause of the 12" crack on the lower cover plate of the steam dryer in Dresden Unit 3? What role did EPU loads play if any?
- 2. What is the applicability of the cause of this 12" crack to the steam dryer in Dresden Unit 2?
What would be the effect of another year of operation of Unit 2 at EPU conditions?
- 3. What were the results of the inspection of the vertical plate of the outer hood (for example, in the area of the top of the gusset plates) of the Dresden Unit 3 steam dryer?
- 4. What were the predicted weak link locations of the Dresden Unit 3 steam dryer for the recent operating cycle? What were the results of the steam dryer inspections in those locations?
- 5. What were the causes of the other numerous cracks found in the steam dryer in Dresden Unit 3? What is the applicability of those causes to the Dresden Unit 2 steam dryer?
- 6. Was the cracking in the Dresden Unit 3 steam dryer expected as typical of steam dryer inspections? If not, what is the basis for confidence in the analyses and modifications to the Dresden Unit 3 steam dryer last fall?
- 7. What role did the previous modifications to the steam dryer play in the cracking found in the Dresden Unit 3 steam dryer? What is the potential impact of those causes on the steam dryer in Dresden Unit 2, particularly in light of the less extensive modification to the Dresden Unit 2 steam dryer?
- 8. Did the previous inspections of the Dresden Unit 3 steam dryer identify any of the cracks found during this outage? How extensive were the previous steam dryer inspections? Could the recently identified cracks have been missed during previous inspections?
- 9. How is the Dresden experience being fed into the Quad Cities steam dryer design and analysis?
- 10. Has the missing piece of instrument pipe identified in INR-D3R18-04-08, Rev. 1, Dryer Bank B& C Internal Indications, been located? If not what is the plan for retrieving it? And if not retrieved, what is the impact of this loose part to safe operation of Dresden Unit 3?
- 11. What is the basis for continued operation of the Dresden units at EPU conditions in light of the steam dryer inspection results at Dresden Unit 3?
