SUMMARY

OF JULY 14, 2005, CATEGORY 1 MEETING WITH OPPD TO DISCUSS THE FEASIBILITY OF FORT CALHOUN BEING A PILOT PLANT FOR THE RESOLUTION OF GENERIC LETTER 2004-02 On July 14, 2005, a public meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and representatives of OPPD at NRC Headquarters, One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the possibility of Fort Calhoun being a pilot plant for the NRC staff resolution of Generic Letter 2004-02 on the potential impact of debris blockage on pressurized-water reactor containment sumps.

OPPD presented an overview of its progress and approach in completing the required actions of Generic Letter 2004-02, along with its preliminary computational results and future plant sump modifications.

The NRC staff concluded that there were several areas of OPPDs evaluation that would be beneficial to review and evaluate. Therefore, the NRC staff accepted Fort Calhoun as a pilot plant and the NRC staff plans to conduct audits at the Fort Calhoun plant site, the New Jersey strainer testing facility, and the New Mexico fluid dynamics computational lab, which involves reviewing the following areas:

  • Debris Generation
  • Transport
  • Debris Characteristics
  • Headloss
  • Coating
  • Downstream Effects The staff requested that a schedule for the audits be confirmed as soon as possible. The staff also requested the GE procedure for the strainer test.

A list of meeting attendees is attached. The presentation slides are available in the Agencywide Documents Access Management System under Accession No. ML051960023.

A member of the public was in attendance. Public Meeting Feedback forms were not received.
