VIRGIL C. SUMMER NUCLEAR STATION DOCKET NO. 50/395 OPERATING LICENSE NO. NPF-12 SPECIAL REPORT (SPR) 2005-002 South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G) is submitting this report pursuant to the requirements of Technical Specification 6.9.2 to address an inoperable fire barrier that was discovered on June 7, 2005 during performance of a surveillance test. V. C. Summer personnel established a roving fire watch in accordance with plant procedures following identification of the degraded barrier, which will remain in place until the barrier is returned to operable status.
Trace 2083 is an Albi Duraspray coating sealing the seismic gap in the northwest corner of the 436' elevation of the Intermediate Building that performs the function of a fire and steam propagation barrier. The delamination found during the visual inspection is considered to be an age-related (initial installation was in the early 1980s) loss of adhesion between the Albi Duraspray and the steel angle that it was attached too. Long term exposure to high temperatures in the steam gallery caused the bond to decrease over time.
Repairs are in progress and expected to be complete during the week of July 11, 2005. The barrier will be returned to operable status following the material cure time of 14 days.
