U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Attn: Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555

Subject:

Notice of Change of Decommissioning Schedule for the NASA Plum Brook Reactor (License No. TR-3, Docket 50-30) and the NASA Plum Brook Mock-Up Reactor (License No. R-93, Docket 50-185)

In accordance with Section 3.A.2 of NRC Licenses TR-3 and R-93, NASA is providing the U.S. NRC with notification of a change in the planned decommissioning schedule that will extend the completion date beyond December 31, 2007. NASA currently expects decommissioning activities to be completed by December 31, 2010.

Decommissioning activities have been being successfully conducted since the NRC approval of the Decommissioning Plan in December of 2002. To date NASA has safely shipped over 8,000,000 pounds of Low Level Radioactive Waste offsite to licensed disposal sites, with a curie content of over 10,000 curies. This is believed to account for 97% of Plum Brook's pre-decommissioning source term, and represents a major step forward towards NASA's continued goal of achieving unrestricted release of the site. -

Significant work remains in the areas of decontamination of structures, soil remediation, and Final Status Survey. This is the work NASA expects to be conducting until license termination is achieved. NASA will continue to keep the NRC informed on its progress as part of its regular Annual Report. Any future changes to the expected termination date will be communicated as they develop.
