Dear Chairman Diaz,

As you well know, the safety of the Indian Point Energy Center is an issue of great importance to my constituents. My purpose in writing today is to convey my displeasure with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's recent failure to mandate backup power sources for emergency sirens at all nuclear power plants. This decision regretfully puts my constituents and all residents of the communities surrounding Indian Point at unnecessary risk in the event of an emergency.

The power outage during the summer of 2003 is demonstrative of the vulnerability of our electricity grid. Furthermore, the threat environment that we have lived with every day since September 1th only serves to amplify concerns associated with the safe operation of Indian Point. People living in communities surrounding Indian Point must have confidence that proper arrangements are in place for an emergency event at Indian Point.

Anything less is unacceptable.

A reversal of this decision would be a positive step forward in the Commission's work to fulfill its primary mission of protecting the health and safety of the public from the unique threats posed by nuclear power. I urge you to reconsider this decision. I look forward to your prompt response to my concerns on this matter.
