Permit No. 6704516 MA Temporary Use of Reverse Osmosis
Dear Mr. Filip,
Per our telephone conversation on May 20, 2005, Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station, PWS 7670905 is requesting an extension to Permit No. 6704516 MA Temporary Use of Reverse Osmosis, which currently expires on May 31, 2005.
A portion of the work on the water treatment plant upgrade included the replacement of the filter media in the polishing filters. In addition, the carbon steel filter vessels were cleaned, removing the corrosion layer, as well as cleaning some of the piping. During the post maintenance acceptance testing it was discovered that due to the combination of new filter media and exposed carbon steel piping the chlorine demand of the system increased and it is not consistent between filter runs. After discussing the situation with the filter manufacturer, they suggested flushing the system to waste until the free residual chlorine concentration is stabilized. Once the demand is stabilized, the post maintenance acceptance testing can resume. When this testing is satisfactory, you will be notified and the system may return to service pending your approval.
To allow additional time for this flushing, Peach Bottom is requesting an extension to July 31, 2005 for Permit No. 6704516 MA for continued use of reverse osmosis in order to accommodate the flushing on the polishing filters and piping.
If you need further information, please contact Art Arcilla {717)456-4185, Daniel Jordan (717)456-4551, or Robert Scholz {717)456-4839.
Thank you for your cooperation.
