R. E. GINNA NUCLEAR POWER PLANT - INSERVICE INSPECTION REPORT FOR FOURTH INTERVAL, SECOND PERIOD (TAC NO. MC1805)

Dear Mrs. Korsnick:

By a letter dated January 13, 2004, R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant, LLC (Ginna LLC) submitted a copy of the Inservice Inspection [ISI] Report for the Fourth Interval (2000-2009),

Second Period, First Outage (2003) - ISI and First Interval (1997-2008), Second Period, Second Outage (2003) - IWE/IWL at R. E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant. The ISI program activities for the 2003 outage were performed on items within the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (ASME Code) Class 1, 2, 3, MC, high-energy piping and components, seismic supports and snubbers. The containment IWE/IWL program activities consisted of the metallic liner and concrete requirements including tendons.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has reviewed the information provided in this report and has determined that additional information is needed. The ISI report states that rejectable indications were found during the examination of weld nos. RC-273-1, pressurizer nozzle to safe end weld (safety valve no. 1), and RC-1000-MSW-1, pressurizer nozzle to safe end weld (spray line). The NRC staff requests that Ginna LLC discuss the examination results of these welds conducted prior to the 2003 outage and state whether the welds contain ASME Code,Section II alloy 600 material. In addition, the staff requests that Ginna LLC identify any rejectable indications in other alloy 600 material discovered during the 2003 outage.

Sincerely,

/RA/
