May 20, 2005 Mr. William Z. Mims Senior PSA Specialist Tennessee Valley Authority 1101 Market Street, LP4F-C Chattanooga, TN 37402-2801
Dear Mr. Mims:
Per your request, enclosed is a compact disk containing the interim Large Early Release Frequency (LERF) Standardized Plant Analysis Risk (SPAR) model for Sequoyah 1 & 2 with its associated documentation and the SAPHIRE 7.25 suite of PRA codes with its associated documentation. Version 7.25 of the SAPHIRE code suite is required to perform analyses with the LERF SPAR model. The software for the LERF SPAR model and the SAPHIRE code suite is located in two separate file folders labeled, LERF SPAR Model, and SAPHIRE 7, respectively. The software package for the LERF SPAR model is in the form of a compressed
(.zip) file from which you can extract the files comprising the model and its documentation to a separate file folder. The SAPHIRE software consists of an executable file that can be run directly from the compact disk. These items are for your organizations use only and are not to be distributed further without the consent of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).
These software packages are provided to facilitate this onsite QA review of the LERF SPAR model for Sequoyah1 & 2 with your PRA staff and the benchmarking of this model against your Level 2/LERF PRA, which will be scheduled at your convenience. Until this review has been completed and this LERF SPAR model revised to address the comments generated during the review, the model is considered interim, and should be used by your staff analysts with appropriate discretion.
Questions about the LERF SPAR model should be directed to Dr. John Lehner, Brookhaven National Laboratory, at (631) 344-3921 (lehner@bnl.gov). Questions about the SAPHIRE code suite should be directed to Mr. Ted Wood, Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL), at (208) 526-8729 (stw@inel.gov). Comments and suggestions may also be directed to either of these gentlemen or to Eli Goldfeiz, NRC project manager for LERF SPAR model development, at (301) 415-5539 (ebg@nrc.gov).
If you are interested in receiving on-going technical support for SAPHIRE, you are invited to join the SAPHIRE Users Group. Mr. John Schroeder, INEEL, at (208) 526-8755 (roe@inel.gov) can provide more details about the group and the services offered.
W. Mims 2 Please note that the information contained in the SPAR model is considered sensitive and should be treated accordingly. The NRC staff is continuing to review the appropriate classification of these materials within our records management program considering changes in our practices following the events of September 11, 2001. Pending a final determination, the enclosed model and documentation have been marked as sensitive information. Therefore, the staff has not made it publicly available. Please control these materials accordingly. We will inform you if the classification of these materials change as a result of our ongoing assessments.
Sincerely,
/RA/
Charles E. Ader, Director Division of Risk Analysis and Applications Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research
