Report of Continuing Hydrogeologic Investigations in 2004 (YA-REPT-00-010-05)
Yankee Atomic Electric Company (YAEC) herewith submits the (enclosed) subject report which discusses the results of ground water investigations conducted during 2004 at the Yankee Nuclear Power Station (YNPS). This investigative phase follows that of the previous year which was reported in Reference 2, and incorporates information earlier reported in Reference 3.
Hydrogeologic investigations addressed in the report encompassed the collection and analysis of four quarters of ground water samples, installation of ten additional monitoring wells in three locations (to further characterize the stratigraphy and hydrogeology at the site), and permanent abandonment of twenty-two older wells. Eight additional wells were temporarily abandoned as a protective measure due to their location in the vicinity of ongoing demolition activities. Twenty data-logging pressure transducers were installed in selected wells to continuously monitor ground water levels, and a data-logging rain gauge was installed to record precipitation.
The report concludes with recommendations to: a) install multi-level clusters of monitoring wells at two locations, b) continue with ground water sampling with the addition of any new wells that may be drilled, c) postpone quarterly sampling until the fourth quarter of 2005 to allow for completion of demolition activities and site restoration, d) continue monitoring of ground water levels and precipitation with data-logging pressure transducers and a data-logging rain gauge, and e) consider discontinuing with monitoring for gamma-emitting and hard-to-detect radionuclides in selected wells.
