I ATTACHMENT RESPONSES TO REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY DOCKET NO. 50-128 CHAPTER 2
- 1. The SAR does not discuss the distance of the National Guard facility.
Provide evaluation of the location of this facility to determine if it represents a new type of accident or external event, or change the consequences of an accident already discussed in Chapter 13.
Answer:
The National Guard Facility is located 5.7 miles (9.2 km) from the Nuclear Science Center and does not represent a new type of accident or external event, or change the consequences of an accident already discussed in Chapter 13. Note:
It was probably not necessary to include this information in the SAR since it is greater than 8 km.
- 2. Are there any jet fuel storage tanks located at Easterwood airport?
If so, provide the distances to these tanks and an evaluation if they represent a new type of accident or external event, or change the consequences of an accident already discussed in Chapter 13.
Answer: The Easterwood airport stores up to 44,000 gallons of Jet A fuel in tanks located 0.92 miles (1.5 km) from the NSC.
The tanks are located across two run ways and are between several buildings and the NSC.
The distance to the tanks and the barrier provided by the runways and buildings help mitigate any fire or concussion effects that an explosion might have on the NSC.
Therefore, these tanks do not represent a new type of accident or external event, or change the consequences of an accident already discussed in Chapter 13.
_ 3. How many hurricanes (and what Safir Simpson category storm) have affected the NSC over the past 50 years? "
)
Answer:
Since 1950 only one tropical storm (no hurricane) has affected Brazos County and the Nuclear Science Center.
This information is the result of a query of the NOAA data base (http://www4.ncdc.noaa.gov/cgi-win/wwcgi.dll?wwevent-storms) for hurricanes affecting Brazos County, Texas since 01/01/1950.
