SUBJECT:

INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN PANEL AT DECOMMISSIONING WORKSHOP

Dear Mr. Kraft:

The staff of the Decommissioning Directorate (DCD), U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, cordially invites you to participate as a panel member at its Decommissioning Workshop, to be held on April 20 and 21, 2005, at The Shady Grove Center, Rockville, MD. The purpose of this workshop is to: (1) Inform stakeholders of NRCs Integrated Decommissioning Improvement Plan (IDIP), including regulatory and program management improvements; (2) Discuss the NRC Staff development of guidance for issues resulting from the License Termination Rule Analysis, and; (3) Solicit feedback and suggestions from stakeholders on guidance, decommissioning lessons learned, and other planned improvements.

As shown on the attached Draft Agenda, the panel in which we would like you to participate is on the morning of Thursday, April 21, 2005. The panel presentations will begin promptly at 9:00 AM on April 21st, following our keynote speaker, Commissioner Jeffrey Merrifield, who will give his perspective on Decommissioning Lessons Learned to start off the 2nd day of our Workshop.

The purpose of the panel session is for stakeholder representatives on the panel to share their lessons learned based on their decommissioning experiences. Following the panel, there will be several facilitated discussions about the presentations provided by the panel, as well as on other lessons learned issues and topics of interest to the NRC staff and other attendees. We hope that the sessions will help us identify approaches, practices, or methodologies (both technical and process-oriented) that either impaired or improved the decommissioning process, ways to record and maintain these lessons learned, and how to communicate them effectively to licensees and others that will decommission facilities and sites in the future.

S. Kraft Thank you for agreeing to participate as a panel participant in our Workshop. We look forward to your participation. Guidelines for your presentation are included as an attachment. For questions about the Workshop or the panel presentations, please contact Derek Widmayer at 301-415-6677 or daw@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

/RA/
