Commission Report I appreciate your willingness to assist me with this request.

As discussed, the Millstone nuclear facility is in the process of relicensing. Millstone is located on the south shore of Connecticut and is in relatively close proximity to the north shore of Long Island, NY.

Currently, there is a 10-mile radius for evacuation in the EPZ. However, there is a 50-mile radius for other areas that might be impacted after a release. The 50-mile radius, if I am correct, is in effect due to slower ingestion of radioactive material that might find its way into water or food.

Portions of this area of Long Island are actually smaller islands that are part of the 10-mile zone. The Town of Southold Supervisor has recently stated that he wants the evacuation zone to be 50 miles to include all of mainland Town of Southold because that portion of the island is immediately down-wind of the facility in the event of a release. Mainland Town of Southold is only 11 miles from the facility.

I have reviewed the documents on the NRC's website and understand that this is not a statutory rule, but rather a regulatory rule. Meaning this is not a law. Have there ever been expansion exemptions? Can the zone be expanded to an area outside the 10-mile radius? Does the NRC still believe that this is an adequate zone for evacuation? We are attempting to respond in a reasonable manner with sufficient support. We currently do not have a position. Any other information would be useful.

Thank you.
