SUBJECT:

BYRON STATION, UNIT 1 AND BRAIDWOOD STATION, UNIT 1 - RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 2004-01, REQUIREMENTS FOR STEAM GENERATOR TUBE INSPECTIONS (TAC NOS. MC4804 AND MC4802)

Dear Mr. Crane:

On August 30, 2004, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Generic Letter (GL) 2004-01, Requirements For Steam Generator Tube Inspections. The purpose of GL 2004-01 was to obtain information that would enable the NRC staff to determine whether licensees steam generator (SG) tube inspection programs comply with the existing tube inspection requirements (the plant technical specifications in conjunction with Appendix B of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 50).

By letter dated October 29, 2004 (ML043060328), Exelon Generation Company, LLC (Exelon) responded to GL 2004-01 for Byron Station, Units 1 and 2 (Byron 1 and 2) and Braidwood Station, Units 1 and 2 (Braidwood 1 and 2). The NRC staffs review of Exelons response to the GL for Byron 1 and Braidwood 1 did not identify any concerns with the inspection practices related to GL 2004-01 employed at those two units. The staff, therefore, concludes that Exelons SG tube inspection practices related to GL 2004-01 for Byron 1 and Braidwood 1 are in compliance with the existing tube inspection requirements.

The responses for Byron 2 and Braidwood 2 remain under staff review and will be addressed in future correspondence. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact George Dick at (301) 415-3019.

Sincerely,

/RA/

George F. Dick, Sr. Project Manager, Section 2 Project Directorate III Division of Licensing Project Management Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Docket Nos. STN 50-454 and STN 50-456
