Comments on PRM-73-12 To the Secretary:

I am writing on behalf of the San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace (MFP) in support of the petition filed by Daniel Hirsch for the Committee to Bridge the Gap (CBG). MFP is a peace and environmental organization, an'd it has been a legal intervenor in cases regarding Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant since 1973. Its members live in the vicinity of the plant, and all are at risk in the event of a radioactive release.

MFP finds it appalling that despite the current. political environment and after the events of September 11, 2001, the NRC has done so little to defend the nuclear plants and radioactive waste storage facilities.

CBG's petition clearly states the regulations that must be changed, the kinds of attacks that we must be prepared for, systems, exercises, and inspections thas Must be implemented, and shields that must be constructed. MFP agrees with all recommendations made by CBG to enhance NRC security requirements for protection of nuclear power plants from terrorist attack.

The NRC has been given the enormous responsibility of protecting the citizens of the United States from the dangers of nuclear power. New and effective NRC security requirements are past due.

Sincerely, Jill ZamEk, Secretary San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace
