OFFICE OF SECRETARY RULEMAKINGS AND ADJUDICATIONS STAFF Hi NRC, As you know, our nuclear reactors are vulnerable to determined attack from land using short range missiles and from the air. Since you have the responsibility of ensuring the safety of the population, you need to do something about this. Spent fuel ponds, in particular, need to be protected from terrorist attack. The financial consequences of an attack on a spent fuel facility at Indian Point or one of the reactors near Charlotte would be incomprehensible. The exclusion zone at Chernobyl is about 1200 square miles. What is the value of Charlotte, NC or NYC if it had to be permanently evacuated? How would the govt pay for relocation?
