January 25, 2005 LICENSEE: Omaha Public Power District (OPPD)

FACILITY: Fort Calhoun Station, Unit 1 (FCS)

SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF MEETING TO DISCUSS A FUTURE PROJECT AT FORT CALHOUN STATION On January 10, 2005, the NRC staff conducted a closed meeting with OPPD to discuss a potential future project at FCS. A list of attendees is attached. The presentation slides are proprietary and are not available to the public.

OPPD is planning to spend approximately 400 million dollars over the next 4 years in plant improvements. With the extension of the operating license until 2033, OPPD felt it was prudent to upgrade many of the plant components in anticipation of another 30 years of operation.

OPPD noted that all these projects have been designed with a margin that would allow a future power uprate of up to 17 percent. However, because of construction of a new 600 MWe oil-fire plant, OPPD decided to delay the implementation for this upgrade. OPPD noted that depending on future needs, it would determine when it might seek to uprate the plant.

OPPD representatives presented conceptual details on the feasibility of a proposed project to provide additional energy supply from FCS. Options being evaluated by OPPD include an extended power uprate and the direct use of thermal energy. OPPD plans to make a decision on the project by mid-summer 2005.

The staff thanked OPPD for the presentation. The staff asked OPPD to keep us informed as they approach their decision date as this project could have some regulatory impacts on the licensing basis of the plant.
