Farley Nuclear Plant - Unit I Results of Inspection per NRC Bulletin 2004-01 of Alloy 82/182/600 Pressurizer Penetrations and Steam Space Piping Connections By letters sent July 26, 2004 and October 21, 2004, Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) responded to Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)Bulletin 2004-01, "Inspection of Alloy 82/182/600 Materials used in the Fabrication of Pressurizer Penetrations and Steam Space Piping Connections at Pressurized-Water Reactors."
During the fall 2004 refueling outage at Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant (FNP) Unit 1, the pressurizer penetrations and steam space piping connections were inspected as described in the SNC letters responding to Bulletin 2004-01 item (I)(c). This letter is to report the results of that inspection, in accordance with request (2)(a) of the Bulletin.
The Alloy 82/182/600 locations associated with the FNP Unit I pressurizer are the butter and full penetration butt welds connecting the stainless steel safe ends at one 4" spray nozzle, four 6" safety/relief nozzles and one 14" surge nozzle (note that the surge nozzle was specifically excluded from the scope of Bulletin 2004-01). Insulation was removed from all six nozzles and a bare metal visual (BMV) inspection was performed (and photographs taken) of each of the dissimilar metal welds and the surrounding base metal.
The examined surfaces and pressurizer shell were clean and free of all signs of leakage, hence, no followup examinations or evaluations were required.
