EDWIN I. HATCH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNIT 1, UPDATED ANALYSIS OF CORE SHROUD VERTICAL WELDS (TAC NOS. MC1322 AND MC5246)
By letter dated November 14, 2003, Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) provided to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) the calculation and description of the methodology of the updated flaw analysis of the Edwin I. Hatch, Unit 1 flawed core shroud vertical welds. In a subsequent letter dated January 30, 2004, SNC provided the related fluence calculation and methodology.
The purpose of this memo is to inform you that by letter dated December 3, 2004, SNC provided an updated core shroud vertical welds analysis based on a reexamination of the welds during the Spring 2004 refueling outage using ultrasonic techniques. The licensee stated that the revised analysis supercedes the analysis provided in SNCs November 14, 2004, letter. As a result, the NRC staff will close the review (TAC NO. MC1322) of the November 14, 2004, core shroud vertical welds analysis and begin a new evaluation (TAC NO. MC5246) of the information provided in the December 3, 2004, letter to the NRC staff.
