SUBJECT:
PALISADES NUCLEAR POWER PLANT - WITHDRAWAL OF A RELIEF REQUEST FROM AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS SECTION XI CODE REQUIREMENTS FOR REPAIR OF PRESSURIZER NOZZLE PENETRATIONS (TAC NO. MC4046)
Dear Mr. Malone:
By letter to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (the Commission), dated August 9, 2004, Nuclear Management Company, LLC (the licensee) requested relief from the following sections of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI, 1989 Edition: IWA-4120, Rules and Requirements; IWA-3300, Flaw Characterization; IWB-3142.4, Acceptance by Analytical Evaluation, and IWB-3420, Characterization, with a proposed alternative to the specific code requirements, in accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 50.55a(a)(3)(i) in the event a pressurizer nozzle needed to be repaired. During the recent refueling outage, the licensee performed a non-destructive examination of the pressurizer and associated piping. Based on the examination results, the licensee determined that no repairs were needed on the pressurizer nozzles. Therefore, by letter dated September 29, 2004, the licensee withdrew the relief requests.
Based on this letter dated September 29, 2004, we have closed out our review of the above relief request and technical assignment control (TAC) No. MC4046 is closed.
Sincerely,
/RA/
