SUBJECT:

BRAIDWOOD STATION, UNIT 2 - REVIEW OF STEAM GENERATOR TUBE INSPECTION REPORTS FOR THE FALL 2003 OUTAGE (TAC. NO. MC2104)

Dear Mr. Crane:

By letters dated November 24, 2003 (ML033360656) and February 12, 2004 (ML040540452),

Exelon Generation Company (Exelon) submitted the steam generator tube inspection summary reports for the fall 2003 outage at Braidwood Station, Unit 2 (Braidwood 2) in accordance with the plants technical specifications (TSs).

Braidwood 2 has four Westinghouse model D5 steam generators (SGs). Each SG contains 4,570 thermally treated Alloy 600 tubes. Each tube has a nominal outside diameter of 0.750-inch and a nominal wall thickness of 0.043-inch. The tubes were hydraulically expanded at both ends for the full length of the tubesheet and are supported by a number of stainless steel tube supports with quatrefoil shaped holes. The U-bend region of the tubes to be installed in rows 1 through 9 were thermally stress relieved after bending.

Of particular note during the inspections, Exelon identified four axially oriented indications indicative of outside diameter stress corrosion cracking (ODSCC) located at the hot-leg tube support plate intersections. These indications were observed in three tubes (i.e., one tube had two indications) and each of the tubes had an offset in the eddy current data, similar to that observed at Seabrook Nuclear Power Station (refer to U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Information Notice 2002-21, Axial Outside Cracking Affecting Thermally Treated Alloy 600 Steam Generator Tubing dated June 25, 2002, and its supplement dated April 1, 2003, for additional details). All tubes containing ODSCC indications were removed from service by mechanical tube plugging.

C. Crane Based on the information provided, the NRC staff concludes that the Exelon provided the required information outlined by their TSs and that no additional follow-up is required at this time.

Sincerely,

/RA/
