SUBJECT:

FERMI SHUTS DOWN TO REPAIR EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATOR DESCRIPTION:

Fermi Nuclear Power Station shut down on August 9, 2004, to repair a scavenging blower on emergency diesel generator 12. The plant will remain shut down until the causes and the extent of condition of the problem have been identified and necessary repairs are completed.

On August 2, plant staff removed emergency diesel generator 12 from service for scheduled maintenance. During post-maintenance testing on August 6, the scavenging blower failed, rendering the emergency diesel generator inoperable.

The plant was shut down because the licensee was unable to complete repairs before the 7-day Limiting Condition of Operation (LCO) expired on August 9.

The NRC resident inspectors are monitoring the licensees assessment and repair plans.

The information in this preliminary notification has been reviewed with utility management.

The State of Michigan will be notified.

The licensee notified the NRC of this event at 10:15 p.m. EDT on August 8, 2004. This information is current as of 12 p.m. on August 9, 2004.
