FW: Revised Referendum

Dear Fellow Entergy Vermont Yankee,

As you may have seen In Friday's Brattleboro Reformer, the anti-nuke group "Nuclear Free Vermont in 2012" has placed language on the March Town Meeting ballot In Brattleboro again this year. Unlike the past two years, the ballot item appears ONLY in Brattleboro and in no other towns. The language is as follows:

"Shall the voters of Brattleboro direct our elected officials to begin now to prepare for the closing of Entergy Nuclear Vermont Yankee when Its operating license expires in 2012 by developing strategies for re-employment of displaced workers and replacement sources for electricity?"

Last year and in 2002, anti-nuclear groups placed articles on the Town Meeting ballots in a number of towns around Windham County calling for shut-down or other specific actions against Vermont Yankee. Together, we worked successfully with voters throughout the county to defeat them.

After studying the 2004 ballot item language closely, Jay Thayer has made the decision not to organize a campaign this year.

The reasons are quite simple:

In 2002 and 2003, the Town Meeting ballot items called for shut-down or other specific actions to be taken against Entergy Vermont Yankee.

There Is nothing in this year's ballot question that calls for a shutdown of Entergy Vermont Yankee or suggests taking any action against Entergy Vermont Yankee. There is nothing to oppose.

We have a very important task at hand this year that was not present during 2002 and 2003: preparing for our major spring refueling outage. We need to devote all our attention and energy to this vital task because safe operation ALWAYS comes first at Entergy Vermont Yankee.

Does this mean that Entergy Vermont Yankee has made a decision not to seek license renewal after 2012?

No. It means that Entergy Vermont Yankee has plenty of time to make any specific plans or decisions on license renewal after the Vermont Public Service Board announces their ruling on our Extended Power Uprate proposal In mid-March. We will address these issues in the proper sequence, one at a time.

Thanks for all your help in the successful Town Meeting campaigns over the past two years. If we put the same kind of energy and enthusiasm into the spring outage (and I know we will) it will be a fantastic success.

If you have any questions or comments on this years ballot or any other Issue, please send me an email or call me at 258-4107.
