OF MEETING HELD ON MAY 27, 2004, TO DISCUSS PACIFIC GAS AND ELECTRIC COMPANYS (PG&E) RESPONSE TO THE SAN SIMEON EARTHQUAKE AND RELATED LICENSING BASIS ISSUES On May 27, 2004, representatives of PG&E met with the NRC staff to make a presentation on their response to the San Simeon earthquake and related licensing basis issues.
The meeting began with PG&Es discussion that their decision for not shutting down the plant was appropriate. The San Simeon earthquake was significantly less than the design earthquake (DE) and did not have the potential to cause damage to the Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP). PG&E further stated that the excursion from the DE vertical response spectra at top of containment was as expected, and the DCPP DE licensing/design basis provides adequate margin for the operating basis earthquake function. Finally, PG&E also discussed that San Simeon earthquake was consistent with the tectonic framework developed in the DCPP long-term seismic program. Following the meeting, the staff expressed its appreciation to PG&E for their presentation.
