RE: Spill of diesel fuel-Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant Oil Operations Permit Number 2002-OPT-2092 On April 24, 2004, a leak on the diesel fuel oil tank of a rental air compressor was identified.
Approximately 4 gallons of diesel fuel spilled to the gravel / ground under the air compressor at the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant site in Lusby, MD (Calvert County).
Personnel responded as per the Hazardous Material and Oil Spill Response Plan and absorbent was used to absorb all of the free diesel fuel. The absorbent and the contaminated soil were placed in 55-gallon drums for a total of 150 gallons of waste and the drums are ready to be properly disposed. The disposal facility is the Radiological Assistance, Counseling and Engineering Corp in Memphis, Tennessee.
It is estimated that no more than 4 gallons of diesel fuel oil was spilled to the ground.
No oil entered the storm drains or the Chesapeake Bay.
It is our policy to place berms under the oil section of the air compressors that come on site.
Unfortunately, the engine and fuel tank is on the opposite end of the piece of equipment.
In the future our intent is to berm the entire piece of equipment to ensure that no leaks can reach the ground.
The impact of the discharge on public health and the waters of the state were negligible. The cost of the spill to Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, Inc. is estimated at $2000.
The above information was reported to MDE (Christy Bujnovcky) by telephone on April 24, 2004.
The leak was identified to be at the seam of the diesel fuel oil tank. The diesel fuel oil tank was drained and the equipment was removed from site property.
